Lakshmi is worshipped as the Goddess of prosperity and the riches. Described to have emerged out of the ocean churned by the deities and the demons, as one of the fourteen gems. She bestows all material wealth upon her devotees. She is particularly worshipped on Diwali along with Lord Ganesh for prosperity.
