Also known as Hari Mandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib, this is the most sacred shrine of the Sikhs. The dome in the shape of an inverted lotus symbolizes concern for spiritual and temporal matters. 'A pathway in the middle of the pool' or Amrit Sarovar is supposed tohave purifying properties, known since the days of the 4th Guru, Guru Ramdas. The construction of the Golden Temple was started by the 5th Guru, Guru Arjan Dev and completed by the 6th Guru, Guru Har Gobind.
